Montreal's renovation market has distinct seasonal rhythms, and understanding them can help you plan a project that starts on the right foot rather than one that gets delayed because every good contractor in the city is already booked.
In a city with a strong and active renovation market, the best contractors are often booked weeks or months in advance. Calling in April hoping to start in May is one of the most common planning mistakes Montreal homeowners make. The contractors who are available on short notice during peak season are often the ones other homeowners declined for a reason.
Material lead times also shift with the seasons. Certain tile, countertop materials, and custom cabinetry components have longer lead times when demand is high, and a renovation that was supposed to take four weeks can stretch to six if materials are ordered too late in the season.
September through November is consistently the strongest window for kitchen and bathroom renovations in Montreal. The summer rush has passed, most contractors have availability, and the weather is still stable enough for any exterior work associated with larger projects. Material suppliers are well-stocked after the summer ordering cycle, and fabrication lead times for custom cabinetry and countertops tend to be shorter than during peak spring months.
Fall renovations also benefit from a natural deadline — most clients want the project completed before the holiday season, which keeps the project focused and moving. At FCD, fall is one of our busiest booking windows precisely because experienced homeowners have figured this out.
January through March is the most underrated window for interior renovations in Montreal. Contractor availability is highest, lead times on materials are shortest, and projects that start in January often finish ahead of schedule simply because every trade involved is fully available and not juggling multiple peak-season jobs simultaneously.
The main hesitation homeowners have about winter renovations is the idea of disruption during a cold period. In practice, interior kitchen and bathroom work is entirely unaffected by the weather — the disruption to your daily routine is the same in January as it is in July, and in winter you have the advantage of a less congested project schedule working in your favour.
Spring is peak season. If you want your kitchen renovation completed by June, you need to be in conversation with your contractor by January at the latest and have your materials selected and ordered by February. Homeowners who start the process in April hoping for a May start date almost always end up waiting until the fall. If spring is your preferred window, plan for it like the competitive booking period it is.
Summer works well for smaller scopes — a countertop replacement, a bathroom refresh, or a powder room update. For larger kitchen renovations or full bathroom buildouts, summer can be challenging if you have children home from school and need a functioning kitchen throughout. For empty-nesters and couples without school schedules to manage, summer is a perfectly reasonable window.
Reach out to your contractor earlier than feels necessary. If your ideal completion date is next spring, you should be having design and planning conversations this fall. The homeowners who are happiest with their renovation experience are almost always the ones who planned the furthest in advance — not because renovation is inherently difficult, but because good planning removes the pressure that makes it stressful.
